How do I lock and unlock my domain name?

Domain names can be “locked”, which prevents the domain name from being transferred to another registrar. For security purposes, ReachONE recommends locking your domain name, and provides this feature at no additional cost. Domain names do need to be unlocked for a transfer to take place, regardless of who the “winning registrar” (the registrar that the domain name will be transferred to) or the “losing registrar” (the registrar that the domain name will be transferred away from) is. If your domain name is registered through ReachONE, these steps will allow you to lock or unlock your domain name:

  1. Click ‘ACCOUNT LOGIN’ on ReachONE.com
  2. Enter your username and password in the ‘Manage Your Account’ and click ‘Login’.
  3. Click on the ‘Services’ menu at the top of the page.
  4. Click on the ‘+’ button to expand your Domain Name Registration service.
  5. Click on ‘List All Registered Domain Names’.
  6. Click on the domain name in question.
  7. Click on ‘Lock’ or ‘Unlock’ at the top of the page.

Note that here you can also obtain the Domain Auth Code for your domain. This will be needed if you are transferring your domain name to another registrar.

How do I get my Domain Transfer Authorization Code?

A “Domain Auth Code” sometimes referred to as “Domain Transfer Code” or “Transfer Auth Code” is needed when transferring your domain name registration from one registrar to another. If your domain name is registered with ReachONE and you want to transfer it to another registrar, the new registrar (also known the “winning registrar”) will need your Domain Auth Code. Here is how to get it:

  1. Click ‘ACCOUNT LOGIN’ on ReachONE.com
  2. Enter your username and password in the ‘Manage Your Account’ and click ‘Login’.
  3. Click on the ‘Services’ menu at the top of the page.
  4. Click on the ‘+’ button to expand your Domain Name Registration service.
  5. Click on ‘List All Registered Domain Names’.
  6. Click on the domain name in question.
  7. Click on ‘Domain Auth Code’ at the bottom of the page.

Note that here you can also lock or unlock your domain. ReachONE does not charge extra for domain locking, and keeping your domain locked is recommended for security purposes. Please keep in mind that you will need to unlock your domain to transfer it.

How to update your domain name contact information (WHOIS)

Registered domain names have “WHOIS” records, which contain information about a domain name. This records consist of contact information, creation and expiration dates, nameservers, and more. Unless the WHOIS data is configured as private with the registrar, it can be viewed online. Follow these instructions to update the WHOIS information for your domains registered through ReachONE Internet.

  1. From the ReachONE.com site, click on Account Login and log in to your account
  2. Select ‘Domain Name Registration’ under the ‘Manage Services’ heading
  3. Click on ‘Domain Name Registration’ and ‘Domain Name Reg. (1 allowed – 1 used)’ to expand the menu options
  4. If this is the domain you would like to update the WHOIS information for, click on ‘Update example.com’ (where ‘example.com’ is your domain name that you would like to update)
  5. Click on the ‘Edit’ button in the ‘Contacts’ section
  6. Change any of the information that you would like to update. After you verify that all of the information is accurate, save your changes by clicking on the ‘Submit Update’ button

Your WHOIS information has now been updated!

How to update the nameservers for your domain name

The nameservers for your domain name dictate who hosts the DNS records for your domain name. Follow these instructions to update your nameservers for domain names that you have registered through ReachONE.com

  1. From the ReachONE.com site, click on Account Login and log in to your account
  2. Select ‘Domain Name Registration’ under the ‘Manage Services’ heading
  3. Click on ‘Domain Name Registration’ and ‘Domain Name Reg. (1 allowed – 1 used)’ to expand the menu options
  4. If this is the domain you would like to update the nameservers for, click on ‘Update example.com’ (where ‘example.com’ is your domain name that you would like to update)
  5. Click on the ‘Edit’ button in the ‘Nameservers’ section
  6. Enter the primary and secondary nameservers, and save your changes by clicking on the ‘Submit’ button

Your nameservers have now been updated!

How to verify your domain name (WHOIS) information

Registered domain names have “WHOIS” records, which contain information about a domain name. This records consist of contact information, creation and expiration dates, nameservers, and more. Unless the WHOIS data is configured as private with the registrar, it can be viewed online. You can perfom a WHOIS lookup from the Linux/UNIX (and Mac) command line, the Mac “Network Utility” and there are also many websites that will perform a WHOIS lookup for you.

WHOIS from the Linux/UNIX/Mac command line:
Simply enter the ‘whois’ command, follwed by the domain name. Here’s and example:

[user@mycomputer ~]# whois example.com
[Querying whois.verisign-grs.com]
[whois.verisign-grs.com]

  1. After opening the Network Utility, click on Whois
  2. Enter the domain you want to lookup (without the 'www')
  3. Select a server to use to perform the request
  4. Click on 'whois' to run your request

  1. Click on the Account Login link on the ReachONE.com site.
  2. Click on ‘Buy’ button under the ‘Buy a Bundle’ Domain Name Registration heading.
  3. Enter the name of the domain name exactly as you would like it to be, including the TLD (top level domain) you would like. (i.e. .com, .org, etc.).
  4. If the domain name you would like is available, select the domain name and choose how long you would like to register it for. If the domain you would like is not available you can choose a similar domain, or search for a different one.
  5. Log into your ReachONE account using your account login, or create a new customer account.
  6. Complete any fields that did not auto-populate, and verify that all the information is correct and up to date.
  7. Decide whether you want your domain to be locked or not. Locking a domain prevents requests to transfer the domain, as well as changes to nameserver information.
  8. Enter the nameservers that you would like your domain to point to.
    • ReachONE hosting customers that would like ReachONE Internet to host their DNS would enter ns1.reachone.com for primary and ns2.reachone.com for secondary.
    • If you would like to host your DNS records with a third party provider, enter their nameservers.
  9. Enter your credit card and billing information.
  10. Review your order making sure that all of the information is correct. Press Submit.
  11. Your domain is now registered!
